Explore stylish and cozy bedroom rugs that offer both comfort and durability. Find top-rated picks to enhance your bedroom design and protect your floors.

I was on a mission to find the ideal rug for my bedroom — one that was soft, colorful, and a perfect match for my yellow-painted walls. After weeks of browsing countless options on sites like Rug gable, Revival, and even local sources like Rug Source, I finally landed on a rug that was within my budget and checked all the boxes. It wasn’t the original one I had my heart set on, but its vibrant design, soft texture, and durability won me over. Rugs, especially in the bedroom, not only add warmth and comfort but also protect your floors and provide that extra bit of coziness. From high-pile, plush options to flat-woven, durable designs, finding the right bedroom rugs involves considering factors like material, weave, size, and overall style. Whether you’re looking for something simple or a statement piece, a good bedroom rug will instantly elevate your space while adding comfort underfoot.

Safavieh Jute Rug

A natural fiber rug that comes in several colors

These finely woven natural jute rugs are easy to maintain and barely shed. Unlike thick, bumpier jute rugs, these are thin and ideal for under a dining table or layering in a living room.

Unique Loom Chindi Cotton Rug

Pi7 Tool 41Pa42QTddL. AC 1

Softer cotton rugs in great patterns

These tightly woven cotton rugs feel smoother and softer than a rag rug. We like that they are machine washable and come in a wide range of patterns and sizes.

Herringbone Woven Cotton Rug

61ZPHiLPJ9L. AC

A subtle pattern in surprising neutrals

This rug’s attractive woven pattern will add texture and interest to any room without commanding too much attention. We like that small stains and marks won’t stand out against the intricate lines of the weave.

Safavieh Handmade Wool rag

51AEWMqidiL. AC 1

Neutral and modern

This 100% recycled polyester flatweave rug, with its neutral yet contemporary modern design, should adapt to most decor and nearly any room setting. Plus, it is durable, comfortable, and easy to clean.

ReaLife Machine Washable Area Rug

A lightweight and easy-to-wash cotton rug

These quality flatweave organic-cotton rugs come in neutral and geometric patterns and can be machine-washed and hung to dry.

Ruggable Quadra Teal Rug

51NFSGb3jCL. AC

A (very) thin rug you can throw into the washing machine

These two-piece and lightweight machine-washable rugs are in a category all their own, available in hundreds of styles and eleven sizes. But we don’t recommend them for high-traffic areas.

Livabliss  Shag Rug

515FIlQ4 LL. AC

A super-plush shag

The dense, soft fibers make it a great rug for a child’s room or any space to which you want to add a luxurious, plush feel on a budget.

Liora Manne Wool Rug

Pi7 Tool 51ZkF ntL. AC

A luxuriously plush and soft option

Minimalist in design and maximalist in feel, this wool rug warms up any room with its toe-curling soft texture and the richness of its dyes.

SAFAVIEH Rag Rug

51VXI3CkItL. AC

Washable, inexpensive rag rugs

This is one of the most affordable rag rugs we’ve found. It is reasonably durable and great for kitchen use because it can be washed, and it comes in a wide range of colors and sizes.

1. Safavieh Natural Fiber Jute Rug

61hSIxEfqL. AC 1

Best for: dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, or layering in living rooms and bedrooms.

Why it’s great: Safavieh Jute Rug from Revival is a fantastic option for those seeking a natural fiber rug that combines style and functionality. Its soft texture makes it a pleasure underfoot, while its fine weave ensures minimal shedding compared to thicker jute rugs. With a delicate, flat appearance, this rug enhances any space without overwhelming it.

Available in the classic unbleached tan color along with eight additional shades, the Safavieh Jute Rug offers versatility to match various decor styles. Although it doesn’t provide much cushioning on its own, pairing it with a rug pad can enhance comfort. We tested the 5-by-8-foot size in both dining and kitchen settings and found it easy to vacuum and lightweight enough to shake out for deeper cleaning. For spot cleaning, a small amount of water works well, but keep in mind that jute is sensitive to moisture, so avoid excessive wetting. Overall, the Hart Jute Rug is a stylish, practical addition to any home.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Two corners of our jute rug curled up for the first two months, but following Revival’s advice to bend and roll them resolved the issue. Most rugs arrive gently folded, so expect some creases upon unpacking, though they tend to fade after a couple of weeks.

Sizes: 2′ by 3′, 3′ by 5′, 4′ by 6′, 5′ by 8′, 6′ by 9′, 7′ by 7′, 8′ by 10′, 9′ by 12′, 10′ by 14′, 12′ by 16′, plus 2.5′ by 9′ and 2.5′ by 12′, and various round and custom sizes.

Materials: 100% natural jute.

Colors: Black, terracotta, olive, teal, sienna, navy, gray, natural (tan), light (white).

Shipping: Free within the contiguous U.S

2. Unique Loom Chindi Cotton Rug

Pi7 Tool 41Pa42QTddL. AC 1 1

Best for: Dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and kids’ rooms.

Why it’s great: These Chindi Cotton Rug are a favorite among testers for their vibrant designs and extensive color options, including solids, stripes, and geometrics. While not as plush as pile rugs, they are softer than most flatweaves and have a tighter weave that feels comfortable underfoot.

Durable and resistant to wear, they’ve held up well since 2016 in various spaces, showing dirt less than many polyester-cotton blends. The small patterns effectively mask stains, and they are machine washable, making them ideal for spill-prone areas, although larger sizes may require a laundromat.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: One of our testers reported some initial pilling on this rug, but after contacting customer service, they received a refund while allowed to keep the rug. The pilling issue diminished after relocating it to a less-trafficked bedroom and washing it a couple of times. Keep in mind that pilling may be a potential concern.

Sizes: Available in 2′ by 3′, 3′ by 5′, 5′ by 8′, 8′6″ by 11′, 2′6″ by 9′, and round options of 3′ and 6′ (for braided rugs).

Materials: Composed of 85% cotton, 12% polyester, and 3% other fibers.

Colors: Features a diverse array of patterns and colors to choose from.

Shipping: Complimentary shipping is offered.

3. Dash & Albert Herringbone Woven Cotton Rug

61ZPHiLPJ9L. AC 1

Best for: Living rooms and bedrooms

Why it’s great: The Dash & Albert Herringbone Woven Cotton Rug strikes a perfect balance between interesting and understated. Available in captivating colors like ocean, dove grey, and coral, its fine herringbone pattern effectively hides small stains. While testers appreciated the slight texture underfoot, it isn’t as plush as some other flatweaves. One editor praised its durability, stating it withstands heavy foot traffic and is easy to clean.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: With its light colors, this rug may not suit high-traffic areas or homes with kids and pets. It also carries a higher price tag and shrank about 10% when washed. A rug pad is recommended to prevent slipping.

Sizes: 2′ by 3′, 2.5′ by 8′, 2.5′ by 12′, 4′ by 6′, 6′ by 9′, 8′ by 10′, and 9′ by 12′ (swatches available).

Material: 100% cotton

Colors: Swedish blue, indigo, ocean, citrus, dove grey, stone, coral, sky.

Shipping: Free for orders over $100; $10 flat rate for orders under $100.

4. Safavieh Handmade Wool rag

51AEWMqidiL. AC

Best for: Living rooms

Why it’s great: Among budget-friendly options, the Safavieh rug stands out for its wool composition, featuring a cotton warp and weft. Tested in an Safavieh showroom, it was the only flatwoven rug in the under-$500 category that impressed us with its quality and softness. Available in five patterns, the black-and-white striped version is especially popular on design blogs for its versatility, complementing both traditional and modern styles. If you’re near an IKEA, it’s worth checking out in person.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Initially, the wool may shed, requiring regular vacuuming. The striped version we examined appeared slightly dingy due to foot traffic, so it may not be ideal for homes with kids or where shoes are worn indoors. Additionally, it feels rougher compared to our other flatweave favorites.

Sizes: 5′7″ by 7′10″, 8′2″ by 11′6″

Materials: Wool and cotton

Colors: Black and white striped, red and white striped, yellow (net pattern), gray (net pattern), brown (checkered pattern), orange (zigzag).

Shipping: Free.

5. ReaLife Machine Washable Area Rug

51MaYimtpHL. AC 1

Best for: Dining rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, kids’ rooms

Why it’s great: Revival’s flatwoven machine-washable cotton rugs offer a soft and substantial feel underfoot, surpassing the thinner synthetic options marketed as machine-washable (like our Ruggable recommendation). Made from 100% cotton, these rugs come in various patterns and are relatively easy to clean. We tested the Holding – Taupe in a 3′ x 5′ size, and while the colors faded slightly after several washes, it has maintained its quality over months of use. This rug is ideal for kitchens and high-traffic areas on its own or with a thin rug pad, but when paired with a thick rug pad, it provides added cushioning, making it suitable for bedrooms and living rooms. Most Revival rugs arrive folded rather than rolled, leading to some initial creases that typically fade over a few weeks. Revival also offers denim and recycled polyester washable rugs, though we haven’t tested those yet.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The 3′ x 5′ rug we tested washed well and fit easily in a standard top-loading washer. However, larger sizes (6′ x 9′ and above) may be cumbersome to handle when wet, necessitating a larger washer for cleaning.

Sizes: 3′ by 5′, 4′ by 6′, 5′ by 7′, 6′ by 9′

Materials: 100% cotton

Colors: Available in several neutral earth tones and patterns

Shipping: Free.

6. Ruggable Quadra Teal Rug

51NFSGb3jCL. AC 1

Best for: Lower-foot-traffic areas like kids’ playrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and spaces where heavy furniture won’t obstruct easy removal for washing.

Why it’s great: Ruggable rugs feature a unique two-piece design that blends the look of traditional rugs with the functionality of carpet tiles. The Quadra Teal design we tested is part of their chenille rug collection, available in various colors and patterns. Their Classic Low Pile rugs are only ⅛-inch thick, allowing for easy washing in standard machines. The setup consists of a rug pad and a removable topper, which securely attaches to the pad. While the thin Standard pad offers a firm feel reminiscent of carpet tiles, upgrading to the Cushioned pad provides extra support and comfort. In 2023, Ruggable introduced Premium Medium Pile rugs that are over ¼-inch thick, offering a plush feel while still being machine washable. However, larger sizes may pose challenges for fitting in standard washing machines.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Although the rug laid flat upon unrolling, one corner curled slightly, requiring a weight to flatten it. Some users have reported curling and edge lifting, especially in high-traffic areas, but those using the rugs in low-traffic settings are generally satisfied. Our original tester rug from 2019 has endured numerous washes without issue, and while it may initially make some squeaking sounds, these fade over time.

Sizes: 2.5′ by 7′, 2.5′ by 10′, 3′ by 5′, 5′ by 7′, 6′ by 9′, 8′ by 10′, 9′ by 12′, 6′ round, 8′ round

Materials: Polyester with a polyurethane water-resistant barrier; thermoplastic rubber pad

Colors: Wide variety of colors and patterns

Shipping: Free (excluding Hawaii, Alaska, and U.S. territories).

7.Livabliss Hapsburg Moroccan Shag Area Rug

515FIlQ4 LL. AC 1

Best for: Bedrooms and kids’ rooms

Why it’s great: The Livabliss Hapsburg Moroccan Shag rug offers a luxurious, plush feel that testers rave about, describing it as “SO PLUSH!” This budget-friendly shag stands out among the six we tested, thanks to its soft, densely packed fibers that feel inviting underfoot.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The 2-inch long fibers are prone to trapping dirt, as evidenced by our vacuum test where it retained quinoa from our “dirt” test. While it’s a great value for a shag rug, those seeking extra softness might consider the more luxurious (but pricier) Hay Raw rug. If unsure, ordering a smaller size to test could be a wise choice.

Sizes: 2′ by 4′, 2′ by 6′, 2′ by 8′, 2′ by 10′, 2′ by 12′, 2′ by 14′, 3′ by 5′, 5′1″ square, 4′ by 6′, 5′1″ by 8′, 6′ by 9′, 8′ by 10′, 8′6″ by 12′, 10′ by 14′, 7′ round, 5′1″ round

Materials: Primarily polypropylene with a jute backing

Colors: Aqua, brown, dark beige, dark gray, gray, ivory, navy, purple, red (availability may vary by size)

Shipping: Free

8. Liora Manne ARCA Indoor Hand Loomed Wool Rug

Pi7 Tool 51ZkF ntL. AC 1

Best for: Bedrooms, living rooms, kids’ rooms

Why it’s great: The Revival Ombre Wool Rug stands out for its plush, soft texture, offering a luxurious feel that’s perfect for spaces where comfort is key. Its medium pile (about ⅓ inch thick) provides a cozy surface, making it ideal near a bed or in living rooms where kids can play. Made from 100% wool with a cotton backing, it feels silky underfoot and is easy to spot-clean. The rug arrives folded, and any creases fade within a week.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: As a wool rug, it’s prone to pilling, especially in high-traffic areas, so it’s best suited for no-shoe zones. It also requires professional cleaning every few years and a powerful vacuum for deeper cleaning.

Sizes: 4′ by 6′, 5′ by 8′, 6′ by 9′, 8′ by 10′, 9′ by 12′, 10′ by 14′, 2′5″ by 9′, and custom sizes

Materials: 100% wool with cotton backing

Colors: Ombre red and orange, ombre taupe and pink, ombre green and yellow, ombre gray and blue

Shipping: Free within the contiguous US.

9. SAFAVIEH Moroccan Tassel Shag Collection Area Rug

51VXI3CkItL. AC 1

Best for: Kitchen, dining room

Why it’s great: Rag rugs are a top choice for kitchens due to their durability and machine-washable convenience. Safavieh’s hand-woven rag rugs are budget-friendly, soft, and available in various colors and sizes. Their variegated design helps mask small stains, and they’re easy to flip or wash. Even larger sizes, though requiring a laundromat for washing, are inexpensive to replace if damaged. One editor has had her multicolor version since 2015, and it still looks great with only minimal wear.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The rug is thinner and bumpier than other flatweaves, so we recommend using a thick rug pad. It may also shrink slightly after washing or warp under heavy furniture.

Sizes: 2′ by 3′, 2′6″ by 4′, 2′3″ by 5′, 3′ by 5′, 4′ by 4′, 4′ by 6′, 6′ by 6′, 5′ by 8′, 6′ by 9′, 8′ by 10′, 9′ by 12′

Material: 100% cotton

Colors: Blue, ivory, purple, ink, yellow, multi, gray, turquoise

Shipping: Free to $5

Our Verdict

After extensive testing and real-world use over several months, we’ve reassessed our top-performing area rugs. Rugs that didn’t hold up in terms of cleanliness, durability, or texture have been removed from the list, while two new rugs, tested during summer, have been added. We stand by the remaining rugs and will continue to test more in this category to provide updated insights.

What to Know About Area Bedroom Rugs:

Texture

When selecting a rug, texture is a key factor. For a soft, plush feel on a budget, the Safavian Milan Shag Collection Accent Rug is a great pick. But for homes with pets or children, a low-pile, tightly woven rug, like the Ikea VEDBÄK, may be more practical. The right texture should suit your home’s traffic and environmental needs.

Maintenance

Rugs in high-traffic areas, or those exposed to frequent spills, need to be easy to clean. Low-pile rugs are generally easier to maintain as dirt stays on the surface. Thicker rugs with deeper fibers, like wool, may require more work to keep clean, especially if dirt settles deep into the pile.

Value

While wool rugs, such as the Rugs USA Diamond Trellis Nursery Rug, can last for decades, they tend to be more expensive and require more maintenance. If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly and short-term, synthetic fiber rugs are an affordable alternative. Although they don’t last as long, they’re much easier to clean and maintain.

Behind the Scenes

We tested 30 top-selling area rugs, evaluating them over 72 hours in a controlled environment and later in real-life conditions for six months.
Evaluation: Rugs were rated on texture, durability, quality, maintenance, and value.

Wear and Tear Tests: Rugs faced a pet brush test for abrasion, coffee grounds for vacuum efficiency, and chocolate sauce to assess stain removal.
Long-Term Testing: After the initial lab tests, rugs were placed in homes for two and six months, where we re-evaluated them based on real-world performance, cleaning ease, and their long-term appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most durable rug material?

Natural fibers, such as wool, tend to last longer and resist damage, though they require careful maintenance. Synthetic fibers, while not as long-lasting, are more stain-resistant and cost-effective, making them a practical choice for busy households.

How often should you wash a rug?

Rugs collect allergens and bacteria over time, especially in high-traffic areas. Cleaning your rug once a year is recommended, either through professional services or by renting a rug-cleaning machine.

What shape of rug should I buy for my space?

The rug shape should complement the room’s size and layout. Rectangular bedroom rugs suit rectangular rooms, while square rugs fit square spaces. Round bedroom rugs work best under circular dining tables or in entryways.
