What to Know About Crochet Blankets Before Shopping
Sizes
Most crochet blankets are available in traditional bedding sizes such as twin (occasionally extra long twin), full, queen, king, and sometimes California king. It’s a good idea to compare the measurements of your mattress to the blanket you’re considering to ensure it will fit comfortably.
If you’re purchasing a crochet blanket intending to use it as a bedspread, you want it to be long enough to cover the mattress on both sides (especially important if two people share the bed—both should have enough material to snuggle in) as well as ample room at the foot of the bed.
Material
The best crochet blankets are typically made of cotton, polyester, or a combination of materials. Some people may choose to prioritize materials that have certain certifications, although it doesn’t necessarily mean a better-performing blanket. A few certifications you might encounter while shopping include:
- STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX: This certification means the fabric must be determined to be harmless to human health, manufactured without potentially dangerous chemicals.
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): This certifies that an organic natural fiber such as cotton was organically grown.
- Forest Stewardship Council (FSC): If you’re purchasing a crochet blanket made from regenerated cellulose fabrics such as Tencel, modal, or bamboo, this certification ensures that the trees are harvested responsibly, helping to prevent deforestation.
Weight (GSM)
The weight of a crochet blanket is generally written as GSM, which stands for grams per square meter. A higher GSM number indicates a heavier fabric. Heavier crochet blankets usually have a denser construction, trapping more body heat and keeping you warm. Conversely, lighter weight blankets with a looser, more open construction, such as waffle patterns, are more breathable and likely cooler.
Keep in mind that some people prefer a heavy blanket but don’t want to become overly hot. For these individuals, a larger yarn with a more open fabric construction can offer the secure feeling of a heavier blanket while still being breathable. Waffle and basketweave crochet blankets are great examples of this.
Care Required
Always review the label on your crochet blanket and follow recommended care instructions. “Brands work closely with the mills, manufacturers, and testing labs to confirm the optimal care instructions to maximize the life of the blanket and ensure that it isn’t damaged when being cleaned,” says Woodson.
It’s also wise not to wash your crochet blankets with other items, especially those with zippers, hooks, snaps, or hardware, as these can snag and damage your blanket. Woodson recommends laundering your cold-weather crochet blankets at the end of the season and keeping them in a storage bag to maintain their condition.
Your Questions, Answered
How much does a crochet blanket cost?
Crochet blankets are available at every price point, and you can find an excellent one regardless of how much you hope to spend. The options on this list, for example, range from $25 to nearly $400.
You’ll often pay more for high-quality materials such as 100% cotton (polyester blankets usually cost less) and for any additional certifications a crochet blanket might have, such as if the fabric is OEKO-TEX or GOTS-certified.
How often should you replace your crochet blankets?
Here’s some good news: There is no specific timeline for how frequently crochet blankets should be replaced, according to Woodson. Caring for your blanket can help extend its life, so always follow the care instructions on the label.
What is the best crochet blanket type for cold weather and hot weather?
Determining the best crochet blanket for different climates can be tricky because all the components of a blanket (the fiber, fabric construction, and fill) play a role in thermoregulation performance, says Woodson. As a result, “there is not one specific component or property that would indicate one product is more or less effective than another,” she says. “It is always the combination of all components working together.”
Still, there are a few features to look for if you’d like an especially warm or cooling crochet blanket:
- For cold weather: Either down comforters or those with a polyester fill can keep you warm while also helping to regulate your body temperature so you don’t overheat, Woodson says. Cotton crochet blankets, cotton blends (such as cotton/polyester or cotton/Tencel), waffle blankets, and basketweave blankets are all excellent for both cold and warm weather. “The waffle pockets will help trap heat while the looser construction and cotton content will support breathability and cool air exchange,” she says. If you live in a very cold climate, you may need multiple crochet blankets or heavier fabrics such as wool or fleece.
- For hot weather: Woodson recommends looking for crochet blankets made from natural cellulosic fibers such as cotton or flax (the fiber used to make linen). “These fibers have characteristics that allow the fabric to breathe, which allows heat to escape and cooler air to pass through the fabric,” she says.
Synthetic fibers (think nylon or polyester) are not naturally breathable and are prone to trap heat, though they can be treated to have moisture-wicking properties. Another good choice can be a crochet blanket made from a blend of natural and synthetic fibers, which could optimize the best performance properties of both.
What type of crochet blankets do not pill?
First, some background on what it means for the fabric to pill: “Pills, the small knots of fiber on the surface of a fabric, are more prone on fabrics that have a ‘hairy’ surface,” Woodson explains. “When there is friction, those hairs will become entangled and eventually form a pill.”
Both natural and synthetic fibers can pill, though those formed on natural fibers will break off more easily, making them easier to maintain. If you’d like to avoid pill-prone crochet blanket fabrics, look for the term “long-staple fibers” on natural materials such as cotton, linen, or wool. “During the spinning process, these longer fibers will create a smoother, less hairy yarn, resulting in a fabric that is smoother and less susceptible to pilling,” Woodson says.
